As is the mother, so is her daughter.
Ezekiel, XVI, 44

An ancient horsehair-covered trunk initiated the creation of this montage. Filled with family memorabilia, the trunk contained photos, antique tintypes, and daguerreotypes of men and women descended from a New Hampshire hero of the Revolutionary War, Captain Nathaniel Hobbs.

Too fragile for public display the photos inspired artist Robert Maniscalco to create charcoal interpretations of the female line of the Hobbs women and their daughters.

All portraits were drawn from the photos with the exception of Carys Anna Rees who sat still long enough for Mr. Maniscalco to capture her from life.

Compiled by Sharon Gates Rees, the montage was completed in May, 2005.
