Getting out of Our Head

One of our first painting projects in my Charleston Southern University painting class was this tribute to Gilda Snowden’s chair series. You can see Gilda’s entire Artbeat episode, along with the entire first season, on Amazon Prime.

These were created in two steps. The first was a random abstract to get a feel for the paint, build up some texture and create a fertile and inviting “imprimatur.” The second step involved painting a stool or chair as directly as possible.

The purpose was to get students out of their fastidious head zone, where they tend to work and overwork the paint in order to satisfy the ego’s idea of what something should look like. I’m very proud of their work.

For security purposes, I’m not crediting them individually. If you are interested in making an offer on any of these, contact me and I can let them know.
