Blue Velvet Still Life

Blue Velvet Still Life

18″ x 24″ oil on canvas, gallery-wrap (unframed)

This “Blue Velvet” still life came out of a request to demonstrate a still life for my students. When I do still lives I like to incorporate personal elements.  I like to combine unlikely elements as well, to create something original. I see no reason to paint another bowl of fruit, unless I can bring something new to the idea.

The air plant combined with an old photo of my mother, behind an amber bottle, has meaning for me. The photographic image is distorted slightly, obscuring the enigma that she is for me. The symbolism of an air plant, living in a piece of driftwood, the blue velvet, the red Christmas bulb, an amber bottle, are all symbolic elements which speak to me about my mother. She was a mysterious combination of these and many other elements which deeply endeared her to me.

I create custom still lives. If you have objects which represent someone you love, I can arrange them into a custom still life.
