Burning Daylight, 24″ x 18″ oil on panel
It is late fall, early winter. A Gullah Geechee woman works the fires, clearing the brush for another season on Wadmallow, just outside Charleston. There is strength and dignity in her work as she burns the remaining daylight until sunset. My goal was to capture this moment, the temperature, the smell of burning leaves, the humidity and of course the sunlight, fighting through the haze.
This is a new version of another of my favorite paintings, The Fires of Wadmallow. Burning Daylight is a continuation of my Iconic Charleston Series. Also my Faces of the Lowcountry series.
