Garden of Youth
16″ x 20″ Oil on panel, framed by the artist
Garden of Youth is inspired by the work of Rene Magritte. This optical trick, where the silhouette of a girl in a dress is hidden in the suckling plant, evokes youth and innocence. The image came to me in a dream as I contemplate the aging process. Society’s obsession with youth and everything new seems more pronounced than ever in this strange period in history.
Our desire for the new, the virginal, is part of a larger body of work, The Quench Project and the Mire of Desire, exploring how our desires tend to control us, whether they are healthy in nature or more malevolent.
