While You Were Beautiful, 30 x 24 oil on panel, framed by the artist
While You Were Beautiful is an over-sized topographical study of the forms and emotions of Sofia Loren, the iconic film star from the 1950s to 1990s. Her strong features and intense gaze were a delightful challenge to capture. What is she thinking? What has captured her attention in this moment? What is she about to do? The thick brushwork and palette knife work creates a feeling of air and mystery.
This painting is in some ways a tribute to the portrait my father painted of the actress, back in the 1980s. Here she is posing with my father, as they present her portrait. I love the portrait my dad made and so did Sofia.
