The San Pan

rob in chinaThe San Pan, 16 x 20 oil on panel, framed by the artist

This is from my earliest series, “The Faces of China.” painted when I was just 23. It was just after a concert tour in China in 1982 with the Wayne State University Symphony Band. We were the first university tour to visit China after the opening of the country by Nixon. It was such a cultural delight for me. Everything was so exotic.  We were the fist caucasians many had ever seen. I took over 600 Kodachrome slides. This was from a few I snapped in Zuchow, the Venice of the East. I created about a dozen paintings for the series.

This painting has recently been made available for purchase, which makes it the last of the series still available. It is one of my seminal works.
