Yellow Rose is a continuation of my interest in floral portraits. I have painted an others. This Rose is from a plant given to me as a gift by Barbara Pitcher, who was the director of our recent Piccolo Spoletto production of Vincent John Doe. I enjoyed trying to capture the soft turn of the pedals into shadow. I am never painting things, only the play of light upon them.
Here are a few process photos. I started with a lose imprimatur and laid in a few key linear relationships. The “essence” of the flower.
Then I began constructing shapes.
I finished by developing edges and refining values.
